Brooklyn Castle

Brooklyn Castle is a documentary about I.S. 318, an inner-city school with more than 65 percent of students coming from families with incomes below the federal poverty line that also happens to have the best, most winning junior high school chess team in the country. (If Albert Einstein, who was rated 1800, joined the team, he would only rank fifth best.) Chess has transformed the school from a "school in need of improvement" in 2003 to one of the best in New York City. However, a series of recession-related cuts to public school budgets now threaten to undo those hard-won victories.
