The true story of Charlotte Salomon, a young German-Jewish painter who comes of age in Berlin on the eve of the Second World War. Charlotte Salomon's story is based on real events. She aspires to one day be an artist because she is very talented and possesses a vivid imagination. Her first love is the one who first recognizes her talent, and his praise serves to strengthen her determination. She manages to get away to the safer region of the south of France just in time as violent mobs are inspired to act by anti-Semitic policies. There, she picks up painting once more and falls in love for the first time in a long time. However, her efforts is once again derailed when a tragic event in her family sheds light on a more sinister mystery. She is under the impression that only a tremendous deed can save her, so she sets out on the journey of a lifetime to paint the story of her life.
