Children of a Lesser God

In his first year of teaching in a school for the deaf, James is inexperienced. During his time at the school, he develops feelings for Sarah, a student who has chosen to remain rather than venture out into the big, terrible outside world. She first avoids him, refusing to read his lips and communicating only through signals. She later comes to respect him. Whether or not her feelings will alter with time is unknown.
