Christmas is coming up soon, and Lucy Toomey's long hours at the best corporate law firm in New York are about to pay off. After the New Year, she will be made a partner. But when her older sister Alice, who had special needs, dies suddenly, Lucy goes back to Nilson's Bay, Wisconsin, to attend the funeral and take care of her estate. Lucy doesn't want to go back to the place where she grew up, but she also feels bad that she was too busy to answer her sister's last call. When Lucy gets back to Nilson's Bay, she runs into Peter, her high school sweetheart and Alice's former lawyer. He tells her that in Alice's strange will, she must live in the family home for 30 days during the holidays in order to inherit it.
