Chronicle of a Passion

After the First World War, the widower Renier returned to his estate in Horlebecq. His only form of entertainment is the letter he has with Rolande, a Parisian he knew before the war. Renier continues to be captivated with Rolande, to the point where he travels to Paris to see her even though his family is trying to get him to marry his sister-in-law Emily. She is successful in convincing him to put substantial sums of money into the "Academie de Beauté" in Paris. The terrible tensions at Horlebecq are a direct result of his risky investments and the fact that he broke off his engagement with Emily.
