This novel takes set in 1937, at a time when the Second Sino-Japanese War was at its height. Nanjing, the former capital of the Republic of China, has just been conquered by the Imperial Japanese Army. As a result of what happened, known as the Nanking Massacre or the Rape of Nanking, hundreds of thousands of Chinese soldiers and civilians were massacred over a period of many weeks.
