Jeremy Prokosch, a philistine in the art film industry, is a producer who is dissatisfied with his director's work. Prokosch has hired Fritz Lang (as himself) to direct an adaptation of "The Odyssey," but when it appears that the legendary filmmaker is making a film that is doomed to fail at the box office, he hires a screenwriter to revitalise the script. When a schism develops between the writer and his wife, the professional and personal collide.
