Dakota
In 1871, John Devlin marries Sandra "Sandy" Poli, the daughter of an immigrant turned railroad magnate. Sandy intends to utilize their $20,000 savings to buy land options to sell to the railroad at a profit. Among their other passengers on the stage to Ft. Abercrombie are Jim Bender and Bigtree Collins, who effectively own Fargo, and Devlin knows they are ready to defend their small empire by evicting farmers by ruining their crops and blaming the Indians for their destruction. Sandy and John meet Captain Bounce, an irascible old seafarer, while sailing up the river on the "River Bird." Slagin and Carp, two of Bendender's thugs, board the boat and rob John of his $20,000 at gunpoint. Captain Bounce pursues the robber's dinghy.
