Selma, a Czech immigrant on the verge of blindness, tries to make ends meet for herself and her son, who has inherited the same genetic disease and will suffer the same destiny without a costly operation. Selma learns to cope with adversity through her love of musicals, escaping her problems, if only for a time, by imagining songs to the rhythmic pulses of her surroundings.
