Easy Rawlins, a black World War II veteran in late 1940s Los Angeles, is out of work and looking for work. DeWitt Albright, a mysterious white guy looking for someone to investigate the disappearance of a missing white woman, Daphne Monet, who he assumes is hiding out in one of the city's black jazz clubs, encounters Easy at a bar. Due to a lack of funds, Easy takes the work, but he soon realizes that he is in over his head.
