She lives with her older sister, Gwen, in a New Hampshire motel owned by their mother, Cathy Moriarty. Harriet is a precocious young girl who dreams of a better life than the one she has now. A mentally ill man named Ricky (Kevin Bacon) stays at the motel. Harriet finds him to be more kind and interesting than anyone she has ever known. In the aftermath of a tragedy, Harriet and Ricky become even more close to each other.
