However, he is already married to Rosalia, and divorce is banned in Italy, so he is desperate to marry his cousin, Angela. To avoid prosecution, he concocts a plan to mislead his wife into having an affair so that he may apprehend her and murder her, knowing that he will receive a reduced sentence for murdering an unfaithful woman. He persuades a painter to entice his wife into an affair, but Rosalia proves to be far more faithful than he had anticipated.
