Two sketches based on World War II episodes. In the first novel, "Scherzo alla polacca," a cunning son, seeking to save his skin, eventually becomes a hero and discovers a reason to fight. To avoid the Warsaw uprising, he initially avoids underground training. When he's sober, his drinking, contempt for safety, and cowardice come across as something sensible in a crazy world. His desire to live out his life is more admirable than any desire for a heroic death. "Ostinato lugubre," the second novel, depicts a hopeless attempt to escape from a prison camp by a man who can no longer stand the confinement and idiocy of the professional soldiers attempting to maintain military preneses in prison.
