Escape from Sobibor

During WWII, an escape from the Treblinka death camp prompted the Commandant of a comparable camp at Sobibor to swear (actually threaten) that his camp would never experience the same tragedy. But those who were its captives, the Jewish laborers that had been spared from the ovens, knew that they were on borrowed time and that their only hope was to escape... the only question was how to do it. On October14,1943, members of the camp's underground resistance killed eleven German officials and a handful of Ukrainian guards in a secret operation. Around 300 of the 600 inmates in the camp escaped, though the majority were later recaptured and killed. The Nazis were obliged to close the death camp, dismantle it, and plant a forest as a result of the escape.
