In 1863, Mississippi farmer Newt Knight works as a medic for the Confederate Army. Knight is against slavery, so he would rather help the wounded than fight the Union. After his nephew dies in battle, Newt goes back to Jones County to protect his family, but he is soon called a deserting outlaw. When he has to run away, he joins a group of slaves who have escaped and are hiding out in the swamps. Knight leads a rebellion that would change the course of history forever. He does this by making a deal with the slaves and other farmers.
