New York cartoonist Duffy Bergman and gourmet chef Meg Lloyd get married. But love alone isn't enough to make them happy; they also have to work hard to be happy. Meg decides that she wants to have a baby. At first, this goal makes Duffy very nervous, but it soon becomes his most important desire as well. As soon as they can't have a baby, Meg starts focusing on her job and the two slowly drift apart, until they break up. That's where he meets Daphne Delillo, who is young and doesn't care about what people think about her. During Daphne's time in New York, their mutual attraction and Daphne's spontaneity make Duffy start a new relationship with her that's a lot more fun than the old one.
