In the movie, Chevy Chase plays the role of Andy Farmer, a sportswriter who, together with his wife Elizabeth (played by Madolyn Smith), relocates to the countryside so that he can write a novel in relative solitude. Naturally, the Farmers don't find any peace and quiet in the oddball town, which is the last thing they could hope for in a place where misfortune lurks around every corner.
