Beatrice McCready, the aunt of missing 4-year-old Amanda McCready, employs private investigators Patrick Kenzie and Angie Gennaro when the police fail to find her. Because they're not cops and because they know their neighborhood, the family wants investigators who have minimal expertise in this type of case. Kenzie and Gennaro battle drug traffickers, gangs, and pedophiles as the case advances. Suddenly, they are presented with a moral issue that breaks them apart as they try to solve the crime.
