In order to examine the consequences of global warming on an Orca pod in the Bering Sea, a group of graduate students has booked passage on the fishing trawler Harbinger. As soon as the ship's crew discovers a recently defrosted piece of Soviet space debris, things go from bad to worse. Tardigrades, microscopic animals that can endure the extremes of radiation in space, may have been used in Russian experiments. The organisms were able to live, but not without undergoing significant genetic modification. As a result, the crew has been exposed to microbes that are rapidly mutating. And even after three decades of isolation, the creatures aren't ready to give up the comfort of human company.
