In India, men first began capturing and domesticating elephants 5000 years ago for use in battle, festivals, and devotion. The little Makbul still interacts with the wild and domesticated elephants on a regular basis as he grows up in the jungle surrounding his home village in southern India. Makbul, over his mother's protests, goes deep into the forest to study the age-old trade of the mahout, or elephant handler employed by the government, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. Vikrama, an elephant calf, is given over to Makbul's care when it is born.
