World War II drama centered on a single move executed by a squad of GIs in revenge against the German Siegfried line. Reese joins a squad of exhausted soldiers who are unexpectedly forced back into the line while en route to a rest area. While the majority of the men evacuate from their positions confronting a German pillbox on the far side of a minefield, a half-dozen men remain to guard a large front. They convince the Germans that a sizable force is still defending the site through a variety of ruses. Reese then leads two of the men in an unlawful and unsuccessful attack on the pillbox, during which the other two are murdered; and when the main platoon returns, he faces a court martial. Rather than face the humiliation, and in an attempt to demonstrate that he was correct, he launches a one-man assault on the pillbox.
