Steven Keats portrays a Russian emigrant who takes pride in his transformation into a true Yankee in the United States of America, despite the fact that the world he inhabits, New York's Lower East Side in the late nineteenth century, is virtually entirely occupied by fellow Jewish immigrants. When his wife (Carol Kane) eventually arrives in the New World, she has considerable assimilation challenges. This creates the tension that moves the movie forward, but it still has a light feel to it most of the time.
