Dr. Hirosuke (Teruo Yoshida) is locked in an asylum despite being fully sane. After leaving the lunatic asylum and being accused of murdering a circus performer, he discovers a photograph of a recently deceased man, Genzaburo Komoda. Hirosuke adopts the persona of the deceased, fooling everyone, including Komoda's widow and mistress. Hirosuke recalls memories that motivate him to visit Jogoro, Genzaburo's web-fingered father, on a nearby island. With Jogoro's aspirations to construct his "ideal community" (by transforming perfectly normal persons into grotesque monsters) revealed, Hirosuke realizes the dreadful truth about his own origin.
