Young Marcus lives on the rough streets of Manhattan. He's about to turn 15 years old, his father has died, and his mother has been sentenced to prison for smuggling illegal immigrants. It's his grandmother's job to raise him. In their basement clubhouse, he and his four closest friends shoplift and resell the items they find for profit to young customers. One is edging closer to being a narcotics dealer. Visits to Marcus's relatives in New Mexico are on his bucket list as a way to escape the city for a while. He also meets Melena, a 14-year-old girl who dreams of moving to Alaska with her father, who is abrasive and uninterested in talking to her. Because of the gang's demands, Marcus is forced to start burglarizing and stealing cars. He just wants to be able to take a deep breath and enjoy the fresh air. Is there anything that can go wrong?
