Both Sabrina Peterson (Roberts) and Peter Brackett (Nolte) are rival Chicago reporters who reluctantly join forces to investigate a train crash conspiracy, biting off more than they can chew while chasing the story and falling in love despite his age difference. Sabrina is an ambitious, skilled reporter determined to uncover the truth about the train catastrophe, which brings her into confrontation with fading star reporter Peter from a competing publication. The antithesis of her: he chases ladies, cigars, and has recently released his first novel. Aside from their differences over the plot, Peter and Sabrina have a number of other issues.
