In My Father's House
Fatima Jebli Ouazzani, a journalist and television producer, and her parents moved to the Netherlands when she was 11 years old. Her father abandoned her mother seven years later and married a 17-year-old Moroccan girl. Fatima was certain of one thing: she would not allow herself to be married off like her mother and grandmother, and thus defied Moroccan tradition by leaving her family's house. The filmmaker of this film, who is unmarried and childless, questions whether she has made the proper decisions. She situates her own history within the context of Moroccan traditional marriage. That is the path taken by Naima, a Moroccan-born Dutch woman. Naima must demonstrate her virginity on the eve of her wedding. The in-laws wait outside the bedroom, according to tradition, to view the bloodstained bedding.
