Institute Benjamenta, or This Dream People Call Human Life
Jakob goes to the Institute Benjamenta, which is run by Johannes and Lisa Benjamenta, brother and sister, to learn how to be a servant. He studies under Lisa with seven other men. They learn strange things like how to move, draw circles, and be submissive. He wants a nicer room. No other students come to school, and none leave to work. Johannes is sad, bossy, and not interested in how the school works. Lisa is beautiful, but at first she is very controlled and then she seems to be about to break. It smells like incest. Both Jakob and Lisa are interested in Lisa. As winter comes, she stops moving. Things get worse, and Johannes notes that all of this has happened since Jakob came. Do things happen for a reason?
