In a little village in rural France, an elderly man and the only relative he has left cast their envious gaze on the vacant land that lies adjacent to their home. They are disappointed to learn that the man who has inherited the property will be moving in because they use the water from the spring to cultivate their flowers. They dig a dam across the spring and watch as their new neighbor struggles through the dry heat of summer to keep his crops watered using wells located further away. They are only concerned with obtaining the water, despite the fact that they can see that his desperate efforts are damaging not only his health but also the hearts of his wife and daughter.
