King Rat
Allied POWs, the majority of whom were British with a small number of Americans thrown in for good measure, were imprisoned in Changi jail when Singapore fell to the Japanese in 1942. Prisoners couldn't get away, thus no walls or barbed-wire fences were needed to keep them contained. Prisoners include an American wheeler dealer named Cpl. King, who has built a decent life for himself in the camp. While the rest of the inmates are starving and wearing tattered uniforms, King eats well and always wears new clothes. After meeting Lt. Peter Marlowe, an upper class British officer, King develops a close bond with him.
