An aristocratic former lover and a prostitute are the subjects of this unique love story, which is based on a novelette by Denis Diderot and features dialogue written by Jean Cocteau. The story follows the maneuverings of a society lady as she concocts a scandalous affair between her ex-lover and a prostitute. Creating a compelling study of the power of revenge and the strength of real love, filmmaker Robert Bresson was already developing his distinctly great filmmaking method with his second feature picture, which was also his second feature film.
