Longtime Companion
Longtime Companion chronicles the lives of a small group of friends beginning with the disease's initial mention in the New York Times in 1981. Initially referred to as "Gay-Related-Immune-Disorder," we see the disease's devastation of our protagonists' life. Jumping between Manhattan and Fire Island, vignettes take us from the it-couldn't-happen-to-me attitude of the disease's early days to the invasive influence the sickness has had on every aspect of our lives today. The film's title refers to the New York Times' unwillingness during this time period to mention homosexual relationships in its obituary section. Rather than that, surviving were referred to as the deceased's "Longtime Companions."
