The events of "Marius" take place at the La Marine Bar, which César and his son Marius own and operate in the Old Port of Marseilles. The fulfillment of Marius's greatest ambition is to leave on an adventure to a distant location aboard one of the boats that passes by his father's tavern. Fanny, a young and lovely seafood seller, has been secretly in love with Marius since she was a child. Marius, on the other hand, has never admitted that he has loved Fanny; yet, he has always adored Fanny. One day, a sailor walks up to La Marine's bar and makes him an offer to work on an exploration ship. Fanny tells Marius that she loves him in an effort to distract him and to make him envious. At the same time, she provokes a fight between Marius and one of César's old friends, Panisse, a boat merchant, who, despite his advanced age, has been courting Fanny for some time. Fanny's confession of her love for Marius causes a fight between Marius and Panisse. Marius is torn between the allure of the sea and his love for Fanny, and ultimately decides to give up his goal in order to be with Fanny, who then gives herself to Marius. Marius changes his mind about going to the wedding as César and Honorine, Fanny's mother, are getting ready for the ceremony. Marius is attracted back to the call of the sea.
