Max is a stoic, independently rich detective from Paris who is frustrated by robbery groups that he is unable to apprehend. He makes the decision to persuade a group of small-time criminals (headed by an old friend) to rob a bank in order to restore his reputation and preserve his face. Max begins spending evenings with Lilly, a prostitute who is the girlfriend of the group's leader, and a reluctant captain gives him intelligence. He urges Lilly to consider her future by assuming to be a wealthy banker with plenty of cash to spare. He makes a suggestion that his bank processes payroll. The plan is successful, the small-time criminals believe they are prepared for a large haul, and the police are present. What possibly could Max's frigid plan fail? Who is captured?
