Mayerling
Austrian Crown Prince Rudolf disputes with his father, Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria, about progressive plans for their kingdom. Rudolf quickly realizes he was born at the wrong moment in a country that does not recognize the need for social transformation. The Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII of the United Kingdom, provides comedic relief. Rudolf takes a mistress, Baroness Maria Vetsera, to escape a loveless marriage with Princess Stéphanie. Their tragic death in Mayerling, the imperial family's hunting lodge, remains a mystery.
