Kit has a limited amount of recollections of his home country of Vietnam. When he goes back to the Land of the Golden Star after an absence of more than three decades, he observes his neighborhood in the same way that a typical tourist from the West would, and he finds that the environment is just as foreign as the language is difficult to understand. The purpose of Kit's travels, which is to locate a location at which he can disperse the ashes of his parents, therefore becomes a component of a journey back to Kit's roots and to the discovery of Kit's identity, which has been rendered ambiguous and complicated by the effects of external circumstances.
