Professor John Holden of the United States travels in London for a parapsychology conference only to learn that the colleague he was meant to see died in a freak accident the day before. The deceased had been looking into a cult led by Dr. Julian Karswell, it turns out. Despite being a skeptic, Holden is wary of the devil-worshiping Karswell. Holden discovers a world that makes him doubt his faith in science after following a trail of odd writings.
