North Sea Texas
Pim lives with his mother, Yvette Bulteel, in a run-down house on a dead-end street somewhere on the Flanders coast. Life here smells like cold French fries, cheap cigarettes, vermouth, and stale beer. Mother Yvette hires her friend Etienne and his dreadful grey Fiat as a driver for the nights she has to "perform." Pim fantasizes about a better life as a child, picturing himself as a princess or a beauty queen. But when Pim reaches the age of 16, he dreams of Gino, the handsome boy next door. There has been a schism between them since they were children. Gino is now Pim's motorcycling hero. Pim's life is made up of cold mockery, minor humiliations, and specks of hope. It's no surprise that he occasionally escapes to his dream world.
