Old Gringo

When school teacher Harriet Winslow travels to Mexico in order to teach there, she is taken captive by General Tomas Arroyo and the insurgents under his command. An elderly American named Ambrose "Old Gringo" Bierce, who is also in Mexico, makes friends with General Arroyo and encounters Harriet. Bierce is a well-known author, and despite the fact that he is nearing the end of his life, he is adamant on maintaining his anonymity so that he can control the course of his own passing. Bierce, despite the fact that he likes Arroyo, makes it a point to arouse the fury of the General whenever possible in the hopes of ending his life and sparing himself from the effects of his condition. Both Bierce and Arroyo pique Winslow's interest, and she, in turn, piques theirs. Both men are drawn to Winslow. She develops love feelings for Arroyo as their relationship progresses. When Winslow finds out that Bierce's true identity is that of a writer whose work she has admired and cherished for many years, she becomes resolute in her commitment to grant his final wish.
