A film director named Frank Capra tells the sweet and funny fairy tale by Damon Runyon. Apple is boozy and brassy. A beggar who has a basket of apples is just as much a part of downtown New York as the old Broadway itself! Dave the Dude is a big fan of her apples because he thinks they will bring him good luck. It turns out that Annie's daughter, Louise, has been living in a convent in Spain all her life, and only Dave and Queenie Martin can help her. Annie's Count and his son are coming to America with Louise and the Count's daughter. He wants to marry Louise, because she thinks her mother is from New York. It's up to Dave and Queenie and their Runyon-like friends to turn Annie into a lady and make the Count and his son think they're hanging out with New York's elite.
