Anna, a young slave girl, is rescued and adopted by Christians in 2nd Century Smyrna, and she becomes friends with their aged bishop, Polycarp. As Polycarp and her new family teach her, Anna struggles to reconcile her beliefs with those of the Christians. When the Roman proconsul orders that all citizens worship Caesar in order to show their allegiance to Rome, Polycarp and the Christians must summon the courage to defend their faith in the face of growing persecution. Anna is forced to confront the truth and decide for whom she is willing to live and die.
