Reaching for the Moon

Elizabeth Bishop, a New York poet, visits Mary, a college acquaintance, in Rio de Janeiro in 1951. Brazilian passion overwhelms the shy Elizabeth. Mary's sassy partner, architect Lota de Macedo Soares, is the polar opposite of her. The architect makes a move for Elizabeth, while the poet eventually succumbs to Lota's advances, despite his initial skepticism. Mary feels envious, but Lota is adamant about getting both ladies. Lota begins work on her largest project to yet, the design of Parque do Flamengo in Rio, which throws their ménage à trois off balance. When Elizabeth obtains a teaching position in the United States, the two women become estranged. Lota is inconsolable, despite the fact that she is normally full of self-assurance. The military takeover of 1964 provides the backdrop for this everlasting triangle. Bishop's emotional poetry are at the heart of a film that vividly depicts a pivotal period in the poet's life.
