Red Sorghum
An elderly leper who was the proprietor of a distant sorghum winery passes away. They take over the winery and establish an idealistic quasi-matriarchal society under the leadership of Jiu'er, the wife purchased from the leper. The narrator refers to Jiu'er's boyfriend as "my Grandpa," and the two of them marry. In response to the Japanese invasion, who subject the area to their authority and cut down the sorghum to make space for a road, the community rises up and resists, and the sorghum re-grows as a result.
