Robert Merivel, a young physician, finds himself in the service of King Charles II and rescues the King's friend. Merivel joins the King's court and lives the high life. Merivel is commanded to marry his King's mistress to appease the queen. The king orders him not to fall in love. Merivel falls in love with his new wife, worsening the issue.
