Robinson Crusoe escapes Britain aboard a ship after murdering his companion over his love for Mary. A violent ocean storm destroys his ship and strands him on an uncharted island by himself. Crusoe is left to fend for himself on the island until he encounters Friday, a tribesman whom he saves from being sacrificed. Initially, Crusoe is pleased to finally have a companion, but he must protect himself against the tribe that uses the island to sacrifice its members to their gods. Despite their cultural and religious differences, their relationship evolves over time from master-slave to mutually respected friendship.
