Royal Opera House: The Sleeping Beauty

The Resting Elegance holds a special place in The Royal Dancing's repertory. It was the ballet with which the Firm reopened the Royal Opera House in 1946 after The Second World War, its first production at its new home in Covent Garden. Margot Fonteyn danced the role of the stunning Princess Aurora in the sneak preview, with Robert Helpmann as Prince Florimund. Sixty years later, in 2006, the initial 1946 staging was restored by then Director of The Royal Ballet Monica Mason as well as Christopher Newton, returning Oliver Messel's terrific designs and glittering outfits to the stage.
