San Demetrio London
the tanker San Demetrio, which had been set ablaze by German cruiser Admiral Scheer and abandoned in the middle of the Atlantic, was rescued by members of its own crew in 1940 after it had been abandoned and set ablaze. When one of the lifeboats returned to the flaming tanker the following day and saw that she had not yet detonated, they decided to board her and put out the fires. Eventually, they were able to restart the engine and decided to take the risk of making it to Britain despite the odds.
