A circus caravan arrives in the town where Albert the ringmaster's family lives on a dreary morning. He hasn't seen them in three years and has a mistress, the young and attractive Anne. Albert summons his wife; Anne, envious and desperate, visits a theatrical troupe and allows an actor, Frans, to seduce her in exchange for a necklace he claims is valuable. Around the same time that Anne discovers it's worthless, Albert's wife refuses to let him live with the family. Albert and Anne are trapped by the circus and each other; there's a show tonight, Frans will be there smirking and sardonic, the bear is mangy, the clown is as sour as they come, and suicide offers an escape.
