Charlie Simms is a student at a private preparatory school. He comes from a poor family. Charlie works over Thanksgiving to make money for his flight home to Gresham, Oregon for Christmas. He does this by taking care of retired U.S. Army officer Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade, a cranky middle-aged man who lives with his niece and her family.
