Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors

Ivan falls in love with Marichka, the daughter of his father's murderer, in a Carpathian village. When tragedy strikes her, his grief lasts months before he returns to the vibrant life around him, marrying Palagna. She wants children, but his thoughts are fixed on his lost love. To reclaim his attention, Palagna tries sorcery and falls under the sorcerer's spell, publicly humiliating Ivan, who then fights the sorcerer. The lively rhythms of village life, work and holidays, the pageantry and revelry of weddings and funerals, the change of seasons, and the beauty of nature give scale to Ivan's tragedy.
