In "Shakedown," Jack Early (Howard Duff) is a photographer who will go to any length to reach the top of the success ladder. He lands a job with a prominent newspaper because to his determination, and it's not long until he makes a reputation for himself by charming a notorious crime lord, Nick Palmer (Brian Donlevy), into allowing himself to be photographed. Palmer takes him under his wing, but Early chooses to bite the hand that feeds him, pitting Palmer against another criminal boss, Colton (Lawrence Tierney). He blackmails Colton into giving him with a consistent paycheck while secretly sidling up to Palmer's wife and romancing the photo editor of the paper where he works.
